There are a number of programs throughout the province that help people manage their renal health and end stage kidney disease. Click on the map below to find out more about the programs in your area.

Zone 1-Western

The Western Zone (Yarmouth Regional Hospital, Yarmouth) operates one of the four Dialysis Programs in the province.

1) Queens General Hospital Satellite Dialysis Unit-Liverpool 354-3174

  • Operated by the Central Zone Renal Program.
  • Referrals from: the Central Zone Renal Program based on availability of space and clinical criteria.
  • Selection criteria: Stable hemodialysis patients with fistula/graft.
  • Transient Hemodialysis: Transient requests accepted at 465-8390.

2) Western Kings Memorial Health Centre-Berwick 538-1297

  • Operated by the Central Zone Renal Program
  • Referrals from: the Central Zone Renal Program based on availability of space and clinical criteria.
  • Selection criteria: Stable hemodialysis patients with fistula/graft.
  • Transient Hemodialysis: Transient requests accepted at 465-8390.

3) Pre-dialysis Clinic-Yarmouth 742-3541 ext. 646

  • Services Provided: Care to patients with renal disease; renal health promotion, prevention, and maintenance and review of treatment modalities to prepare patient for when they need dialysis.
  • Referrals from: the county of Digby, Yarmouth, and Shelburne.
  • Triage criteria: Nephrologist reviews all consults.
  • Contact: Nephrologist’s office.
  • Education: Normal kidney function; risk factors for Chronic Kidney Disease and Chronic Kidney Disease, treatment modalities, Chronic Kidney Disease diet, in a classroom and clinic setting.

4) Hemodialysis Unit-Yarmouth 742-3541 ext. 149

  • Services provided: Acute and chronic hemodialysis.
  • Hours of operation: 07:30 – 22:30 six days/week.
  • Referrals from: County of Digby, Yarmouth, and Shelburne.
  • Transient Hemodialysis: Available on a limited basis, contact Unit Manager, 902-742-3542 ext 422.

Zone 2-Northern

1) Colchester East Hants Health Centre Satellite Dialysis Unit- Truro 893-5554 ext. 42403

  • Operated in collaboration with the Central Zone Renal Program.
  • Referrals from: Access to the program through the Central Zone Renal Program referral.
  • Selection criteria: Chronic hemodialysis patient.
  • Transient Hemodialysis: Transient requests accepted by contacting 902-893-5554 ext. 42403.

2) All Saints Community Hospital Satellite Dialysis Unit- Springhill 597-7180

  • Operated by the Central Zone Renal Program.
  • Referrals from: the Central Zone Renal Program based on availability of space and clinical criteria.
  • Selection criteria: Stable hemodialysis patients with fistula/graft.
  • Transient Hemodialysis: Transient requests accepted at 465-8390.

3) Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital Satellite Dialysis Unit-Pictou 485-2307

  • Operated by the Central Zone Renal Program.
  • Referrals from: the Central Zone Renal Program based on availability of space and clinical criteria.
  • Selection criteria: Stable hemodialysis patients with fistula/graft.
  • Transient Hemodialysis: Transient requests accepted at 465-8390.

Zone 3-Eastern

The Eastern Zone (Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney) operates one of the four Dialysis Programs in the province.

1) Renal Clinic Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney 902-567-8067

  • Services provided: Care to patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD); treatment options and renal health promotion, prevention, and maintenance.
  • Pre renal transplant preparation and follow up Transplant Clinic.
  • Referrals:  Accepted from Family Physician to Nephrologist.
  • Triage criteria: Based on acuity i.e.: symptom management, creatinine, kidney function, anemia management.
  • How to contact Nephrologists: Renal Clinic 567-8067or fax 567-7939 or Nephrologist office.
  • Education modules: Anemia Management, Modality Selection, Transplant Services, Vascular Access, and Smoking Cessation.

2) Peritoneal Dialysis Clinic, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney 902-567-8067

  • Services provided: Initial training for patients, families and caregivers for CAPD and CCPD, ongoing follow up for patients, training and support for Nursing Homes, Continuing Care, and VON.
  • Hours of operation: Monday to Friday 0730 - 1530 and on call after hours through the hospital switchboard 567-8000.
  • Referrals from: Eastern Zone through the nephrologists.

3) Home Hemodialysis Clinic, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney 902-567-8067

  • Services provided: Initial education and training on Home hemodialysis for patients and caregivers.  Ongoing follow up for patients and caregivers.
  • Hours of operation: Monday to Friday 0730 - 1530 and on call after hours through the hospital switchboard 567-8000.
  • Referrals from: the Eastern Zone through the nephrologists.

4) Hemodialysis, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney 902-567-7817

  • Services provided: Conventional Chronic Hemodialysis, short daily hemodialysis, acute dialysis in ICU, CCU, ER.
  • Hours of operation: Monday to Saturday 0700 - 1900 and on call.
  • Referrals from: Eastern Zone through the nephrologists.
  • Transient Hemodialysis: Transient requests will be considered, based on availability and clinical criteria.  Please contact Cape Breton Regional Hospital In Center Unit 902-567-7817.           

5) Hemodialysis, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, North Sydney 902-794-5455

  • Services provided: Conventional Chronic Hemodialysis, short daily hemodialysis.
  • Hours of operation:  Monday to Saturday 0700 - 19:00.
  • Referrals from: North Sydney and area through the Cape Breton Renal Program.
  • Transient Hemodialysis: Transient requests will be considered, based on availability and clinical criteria.  Please contact Cape Breton Regional Hospital In Center Unit 902-567-7817.

6) Satellite Hemodialysis Unit, Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, Inverness 902-258-1950

  • Operated by the Eastern Zone Renal Program.
  • Referrals from: Eastern Zone Renal Program based on availability of space and clinical criteria.
  • Selection criteria: Stable hemodialysis patients.
  • Transient Hemodialysis: Transient requests will be considered, based on availability and clinical criteria.  Please contact Cape Breton Regional Hospital In Center Unit 902-567-7817.

7) St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Dialysis Unit-Antigonish 867-4744

  • Eastern Zone unit operated in collaboration with the Central Zone.
  • Referrals from: Access to the program through the Central Zone Renal Program referral.
  • Selection criteria: (Same as Dartmouth General Dialysis Unit).
  • Transient Hemodialysis: Transient requests accepted by contacting 902-867-4233.

8) Strait Richmond Hospital Satellite Dialysis Unit-Cleveland 625-3100 ext. 254

  • Operated by the Central Zone Renal Program.
  • Referrals from: the Central Zone Renal Program based on availability of space and clinical criteria.
  • Selection criteria: Stable hemodialysis patients with fistula/graft.
  • Transient Hemodialysis: Transient requests accepted at 465-8390.

Zone 4-Central

The Central Zone (QE II Health Sciences Centre, Halifax) operates one of the four Dialysis Programs in the province.  Renal Program Website

1) Renal Clinic and Pre-dialysis-Halifax 473-5244

  • Services provided: Care to patients with progressive renal disease; treatment options and renal health promotion, prevention, and maintenance.
  • Referrals: Program access is through primary care physician referral, faxed to 473-2675. See the former Capital District Health Authority website for more details.
  • Triage criteria: Determination of urgency is based on information included in referral.
  • Contact: Nephrologist on call 24/7; reached through locating 473-2220.
  • Education modules: Kidney Care and Treatment Options.

2) Hemodialysis Unit-Halifax 473-7544

  • Services provided: Acute and chronic hemodialysis.
  • Hours of operation: Monday through Saturday 07:00-23:30 and on call.
  • Referrals: Access to the program through Nephrologist/Nurse Practitioner Referral.
  • Transient Hemodialysis: Not available at this time due to capacity issues.

3) Hemodialysis Unit-Dartmouth 465-8390

  • Services provided: Chronic Hemodialysis.
  • Hours of operation: Monday-Saturday 0700-2330.
  • Referrals: Access to the program through Nephrologist/Nurse Practitioner Referral.
  • Transient Hemodialysis: Not available at this time due to capacity issues.

4) Community Home Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis Unit-Halifax 473-2154 and 473-6524

  • Services provided: Home peritoneal and hemodialysis training and support.
  • Hours of operation: Monday to Friday 07:30-15:30 and on call.
  • Referrals: Program access through Nephrologist/Nurse Practitioner referral.

5) Community Satellite Hemodialysis Program-Halifax 473-2154

  • Location of Satellite Units: Liverpool, Berwick, Truro, Springhill, Pictou, Antigonish, Port Hawkesbury.
  • Services provided: Chronic hemodialysis for stable patient population.
  • Selection criteria: Based on availability of space and clinical criteria.
  • Transient Hemodialysis: Transient requests accepted at 465-8390.

6) Nephrology/Transplant Inpatient Unit-Halifax 473-2635

  • Services provided: Acute in hospital care to patients with renal disease. Pre and post operative care for patients undergoing kidney transplant.

IWK Health Centre

The IWK Health Centre operates one of the four Dialysis Programs in the province.

1) Nephrology Clinic-Halifax

  • Referrals: Accepted from all 4 Atlantic provinces
  • Triage criteria: Nephrologist reviews all consults, biography.
  • Contact: IWK Switchboard, 902 470-8195/ Fax 902 470-8902.
  • Education modules: PD Dialysis policies, Renal Transplant workshops.

2) Hemodialysis Unit-Halifax

  • Services provided: IPD, CCPD, Acute Hemodialysis, Chronic hemodialysis, CRRT.
  • Hours of operation: Availability 24 hours / day.
  • Referrals from: All 4 Atlantic Provinces, IWK PICU / NICU.
  • Traveling Patients: No.

3) Peritoneal Dialysis Unit-Halifax

  • Services provided: Peritoneal dialysis, family teaching, calls pertaining to services.
  • Hours of operation: Availability 24 hours / day.
  • Referrals: Accepted from all 4 Atlantic Provinces.

4) Nephrology Inpatient Unit-Halifax

  • Services provided: Inpatient care for acute/chronic renal failure, electrolyte disorder, tubulopathy, hypertension, nephrotic/nephritic syndromes, biopsies, renal disease management, metabolic workup, acute peritoneal dialysis and transplant care.
